Meet Lukas in New York!

Meet Lukas in New York!

"Opportunities like this don't come around often, and you'll learn far more than you expect."

Why did you choose to go abroad?

I've always been fascinated by the United States, especially New York City. The energy, diversity, and opportunities available here made it a place I wanted to experience for myself. I didn't just want to visit—I wanted to live here, work here, and challenge myself in a completely new environment. The J-1 program gave me the opportunity to gain international work experience while stepping far outside my comfort zone. Leaving my family, friends, and the life I had built in the Netherlands wasn't easy, but I knew it was an opportunity that could help me grow both personally and professionally.

How does the US culture differ from your culture and what have you learned you most so far?

Professionally, I've developed stronger communication and sales skills. Working with American clients every day has taught me how to communicate more effectively, build relationships, and better understand customer needs. It has also improved my confidence in speaking English in a professional environment. I've also become much more independent. Living in another country means learning how to manage everything yourself, from daily life to balancing work and personal goals. I've also learned to adapt quickly, stay disciplined, and become comfortable in unfamiliar situations.

What is a day in your life like?

Simply experiencing New York as a resident instead of a tourist. Walking through different neighborhoods, meeting people from all over the world, and discovering something new almost every day has been an unforgettable experience. Another highlight has been documenting my journey through YouTube. Recording my experiences has allowed me to reflect on how much I've grown and share my perspective with people who may be thinking about taking a similar step themselves.

How has this experience helped you to grow personally and professionally?

Professionally, this experience has shown me what it's like to work in one of the most competitive business environments in the world. I've learned that continuous improvement is essential and that every conversation is an opportunity to learn something new. Personally, moving to New York has given me much more confidence. It proved to me that I can build a life in a completely different country and overcome challenges that once seemed intimidating. It also reinforced the importance of taking opportunities when they come, because real growth happens outside your comfort zone.

Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?

I would absolutely recommend it. Moving to another country can feel overwhelming at first, but it's one of the best investments you can make in yourself. You'll grow professionally, become more independent, and gain experiences that stay with you for the rest of your life. Stage-Global made the entire visa process much easier, which allowed me to focus on preparing for the move instead of worrying about paperwork. If you're considering a J-1 program, I'd say go for it. Opportunities like this don't come around often, and you'll learn far more than you expect.
